Is there to keep the body of the text from getting wider when you make the margins narrower? I am trying to keep the text the same width so my background image will extend beyond the text, and the text will not extend to the edges of the background.

I assume you have inserted a page background with Format > Page > Backgroud > Graphic, etc.

You simply need to indent your paragraph style, i.e., Format > Paragraph > Indents&Spacing tab then use Indents - From left and/ or From right (may be called before and after text). Use the First line box if you need that too.
