I have hit this problem with more than one version of OO (latest 3.2) on Mac OS X (10.4 & 10.6). Yes, I *have* searched the forums: no mention of 3D.
When one creates a 3D (e.g.rotation) object, and it is selected, all the sections of the 3D Effects toolbar are greyed, so nothing can be done with the object other than resizing & rotating it. This is frustrating to say the least.
I have seen, in rare & unknown circumstances, this toolbar to be operable as it should be. There must be a sure way of activating it. Can somebody please point the way?
[Have no such problem with Draw on Linux].

Without having the slightest idea how/why, the problem has 'gone away'. I played long today with Draw OO3.2 on Mac OS X Snow Leopard 10.6, and am delighted that 3d Effects work as described! Yet the problem originally noted *was* observed routinely; honest.
(The only system change was about Python fro Inkscape; but I cannot imagine this was at all relevant).
Sorry for a false alarm; though no-one jumped in!
